What You Need to Know About the Rising Threat of Banking Trojans https://www.webpronews.com/banking-trojans/ Fri, 31 May 2024 10:50:24 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604966 In the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats, banking app trojans stand out as one of the most insidious dangers today. These sneaky apps have the potential to wreak havoc on your finances by stealing personal information. Understanding what they are, how they operate, and how to protect yourself is crucial in today’s digital age.

What are Banking App Trojans?

The digital world’s trojans borrow their name from classic Greek myth. First told by Homer in his epic poem the Odyssey, the myth of the Trojan horse describes how Greek soldiers were able to infiltrate Troy, their rival’s city, during war.

The Greeks hid in an enormous wooden horse left at the impenetrable city gates as an offering to the goddess Athena. The Trojans brought it inside their city limits thinking this gift was a harmless donation from some unknown benefactor.

When the Trojans pulled the horse inside, they unwittingly invited their opponents into their home, and they suffered a steep price. The hiding Greeks waited until nightfall to creep out, opening the sturdy gates to let the rest of the Greek army into destroy the city of Troy and win the war

These days, the Trojan horse myth has become synonymous with any scenario that convinces a target to invite their rivals into their protected circle. When it comes to the tech world, the Trojan horse represents any malware that tricks you into letting it onto your device to do something nefarious.

Banking app trojans are a specific type of virus that targets mobile banking apps. Just like the Greek myth of old, these digital trojans masquerade as legitimate apps you want on your phone — often totally unrelated to finances, like QR code readers or productivity trackers.

What do Trojan Apps Do on Your Phone?

Getting onto your phone is only the first step. The second step is gaining permissions so that they can track your device and the personal information you share.

Many of these apps do this by issuing permission screens that all apps have — even the most legitimate ones. You might allow the trojan full access to your phone by granting permission, thinking nothing unusual about these requests.

SharkBot has been heralded as the new generation of banking trojans that follow this strategy. It deposits itself onto your phone as a file recovery service. Once you install and open it on your phone, it asks for the usual permissions to access videos, photos, and audio on your device. However, it also requests additional permissions that, if granted, allow it to interact with other apps and send payments on Google Play.

If you unthinkingly grant these permissions, SharkBot has the information it needs to go through your phone, stealing personal information. Things like login credentials and passwords aren’t safe.

Anatsa, a malware dropper, is another banking trojan that goes about stealing your information in a different way. Rather than asking for permissions, it leverages updates to do its bidding. After you install the dummy app, the developers send out an update that alters its AccessibilityService control. This bait-and-switch trick allows the developers to take over the device and steal information.

Navigating the Evolving Threat Landscape

Recently, there have been more and more of these trojans popping up. They come with lots of fancy features that help them stay hidden and defraud people.

A study done by Zimperium, a mobile security platform, found that ten new banking trojans debuted in 2023. These trojans targeted 985 banking and finance apps in 61 different countries.

Trojan banking apps have the power to do lots of different things, like automatically moving money around or even letting hackers see what’s happening on your screen.

What’s even scarier is that hackers are getting smarter about tricking people into downloading these trojans. They’re using tactics like pretending to be customer support agents or sending out fake messages to trick people into installing the trojans without knowing it.

Protecting Yourself

Forewarned is forearmed. Had the Trojans known the Greeks could hide in a horse disguised as a religious offering, they would never have dragged the horse inside their city limits. You too can keep trojans off your phone now that you know that malware can scam its way on your device.

Follow these tips to manage accounts, pay bills, and borrow money online safely.

Stick to Official App Stores

Avoid downloading apps from unofficial sources or third-party app stores, as these are more likely to harbor malware. Stick to reputable platforms like Google Play, and carefully review user reviews and developer credentials before installing any app.

Exercise Caution with Permissions

During the installation process, pay close attention to the permissions requested by an app. Be wary of applications that ask for unnecessary access to sensitive features, such as device storage or accessibility services. If in doubt, err on the side of caution and refrain from granting excessive permissions.

Stay Updated

Keep your device’s operating system and applications up to date with the latest security patches and software updates. These updates often contain fixes for known vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cybercriminals.

Opt for Web-Based Services

You may sidestep the whole issue of trojan apps by switching to digital banking. Reputable web-based services like Fora Credit offer the same convenience with online, browser-based options and none of the app-based security risks. You can even use your phone to access these sites.

Enable Security Solutions

Consider using reputable mobile security solutions to detect and block threats in real-time. Antivirus software or anti-malware apps can provide an additional layer of defense against trojans and other forms of malware.

Practice Vigilance

Remain vigilant while browsing the web or using mobile apps, especially when entering sensitive information like passwords or financial details. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources, as this could lead to the inadvertent installation of malware.

Follow this advice even if your financial institution doesn’t have an app.

By staying informed and adopting proactive security measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to banking app trojans and other cyber threats. Remember, when it comes to safeguarding your digital assets, vigilance is key.

Banking on Mobile with Caution

Banking app trojans loom large, posing as formidable challenges to people like you who just want to manage their finances with their phones. You can get out from under their shadow by following the tips you learned here today.

Armed with knowledge, vigilance, and proactive security measures, you can spot and avoid trojans before they sneak onto your phone.

Elon Musk Criticizes New Tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicles https://www.webpronews.com/elon-musk-criticizes-new-tariffs-on-chinese-electric-vehicles/ Fri, 24 May 2024 19:20:00 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604914 In a significant policy shift, the Biden administration has announced new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), raising duties from 25% to 100%. This decision has sparked controversy across various sectors, particularly the automotive industry. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has strongly opposed the new tariffs, labeling them as detrimental to free trade and market fairness. At a Paris tech conference, Musk emphasized, “Things that inhibit freedom of exchange or distort the market are not good.”

The Biden administration’s move aims to curb the influx of low-cost Chinese EVs, which are perceived as a strategic threat to global market competition. President Biden, in an exclusive interview with Yahoo Finance, defended the decision, stating, “If we allow them to continue what they’re doing—flooding the market with EVs that are incredibly cheap—they’re not making any money on them, deliberately doing it to put other people out of business.” This justification highlights the administration’s concerns about market manipulation and the long-term viability of domestic industries in the face of aggressive pricing strategies by Chinese manufacturers.

The backdrop of this policy change is the rapid expansion of Chinese electric vehicle makers into international markets. Although China remains the largest EV market, Chinese manufacturers have aggressively expanded into Europe and other regions as their domestic market growth slows. Last year, Chinese carmakers increased their market share in the European EV market to 20%, up from 16% the previous year, primarily by leveraging a significant cost advantage. “Chinese carmakers have a 30% cost advantage over their European rivals, which has allowed them to increase their presence significantly in the EU market,” explained Akiko Fujita from Yahoo Finance.

Industry leaders argue that tariffs alone will not address the underlying challenges despite these competitive pressures. Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, has been vocal about the need for Western automakers to innovate and restructure. “Tariffs are a major trap for the countries that go on that path,” Tavares warned. He emphasized that the automotive industry must find ways to compete with Chinese manufacturers’ cost advantages through strategic innovation and efficiency improvements. As the global auto market navigates these changes, the industry’s future will likely depend on a combination of protective measures, strategic investments, and collaborative efforts to foster a competitive and sustainable market environment.

A Policy Shift and Its Implications

The Biden administration’s decision to drastically increase tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles marks a significant policy shift that has drawn praise and criticism. This move aims to curb the influx of low-cost Chinese EVs, which the administration argues are part of a strategy to dominate global markets by undercutting prices. “If we allow them to continue what they’re doing—flooding the market with EVs that are incredibly cheap—they’re not making any money on them, deliberately doing it to put other people out of business,” President Biden told Yahoo Finance.

The new tariffs, which raise duties on Chinese EVs from 25% to 100%, are intended to level the playing field for American and other non-Chinese manufacturers. However, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has voiced strong opposition to this approach. “Things that inhibit freedom of exchange or distort the market are not good,” Musk stated, highlighting his belief that such measures could stifle competition and innovation rather than foster a healthy market environment.

This policy shift has significant implications for the global electric vehicle market. Chinese carmakers, such as BYD and NIO, have been expanding aggressively into international markets, particularly in Europe. As the Chinese domestic market slows, these companies have sought new opportunities abroad, leveraging their cost advantages to capture market share. “Chinese carmakers have a 30% cost advantage over their European rivals, and this has allowed them to increase their market share in the EU to 20% last year, up from 16% the previous year,” noted Akiko Fujita from Yahoo Finance.

The European Commission is also considering imposing tariffs on Chinese car imports, with estimates suggesting these could range from 15% to 20%. Some studies, like one from the Rhodium Group, suggest that tariffs might need to be as high as 55% to effectively curb imports. This mirrors the concerns in the U.S. about maintaining competitive markets in the face of low-cost Chinese imports. “There is a real concern that without significant tariffs, Chinese carmakers will dominate the market, pushing out competitors with their lower prices,” an industry analyst commented.

Despite these concerns, some industry leaders argue that tariffs are not the ultimate solution. Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, has been vocal about Western automakers needing to adapt and innovate rather than rely on protective measures. “Tariffs are a major trap for the countries that go on that path,” Tavares warned. He emphasized that the automotive industry must find ways to compete with Chinese manufacturers’ cost advantages through restructuring and strategic innovation. “When you fight against the competition that has a 30% cost competitiveness edge, there are social consequences,” Tavares added, indicating the broader economic and social impacts of relying solely on tariffs.

The debate over tariffs reflects broader concerns about globalization and fair trade practices. While tariffs might temporarily relieve domestic industries, they also risk escalating trade tensions and potentially increasing consumer costs. The path forward for the global auto market will likely require a balanced approach that includes both strategic industry adaptations and thoughtful trade policies to foster a competitive and fair market environment. Musk pointed out, “The best way to ensure a vibrant market is to focus on innovation and fair competition, not market distortions.”

Market Dynamics and Global Competition

The backdrop of this policy change is the rapid expansion of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers into international markets.

This expansion has not gone unnoticed by European regulators. The European Commission is considering imposing tariffs on Chinese car imports, with estimates suggesting these tariffs could range from 15% to 20%. Some studies, such as one from the Rhodium Group, indicate that tariffs might need to be as high as 55% to curb imports and protect local industries effectively. “There is a real concern that without significant tariffs, Chinese carmakers will dominate the market, pushing out competitors with their lower prices,” an industry analyst commented.

Despite these efforts, some industry leaders argue that tariffs alone will not be enough to address the competitive threat posed by Chinese EVs. Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, highlighted the need for Western automakers to adapt and innovate rather than rely solely on protective measures. “Tariffs are a major trap for the countries that go on that path,” Tavares said in a recent interview.

The global competition in the EV market is intensifying as Chinese manufacturers continue to make inroads into new markets. Elon Musk pointed out that models like the BYD Seagull, which sells for roughly $10,000, could remain cost-competitive even with the new tariffs. “The price advantage of Chinese EVs is so significant that even with tariffs, they can still compete effectively in the market,” Musk noted. This price advantage forces Western automakers to reconsider their strategies and cost structures, highlighting the need for innovation and efficiency.

Moreover, the competitive dynamics are not limited to pricing alone. Chinese manufacturers have invested heavily in technology and production capabilities, further enhancing their competitive edge. “Chinese carmakers are not just competing on price; they are also rapidly advancing their technology and manufacturing processes,” an automotive industry expert explained. This holistic approach to competition underscores the need for Western automakers to innovate across multiple dimensions to remain competitive.

The global auto market is at a crossroads with significant implications for manufacturers, consumers, and policymakers. The debate over tariffs highlights the complex interplay between trade policies and market dynamics. While tariffs might provide temporary relief for domestic industries, they also risk escalating trade tensions and potentially increasing costs for consumers. As Musk pointed out, “The best way to ensure a vibrant market is to focus on innovation and fair competition, not market distortions.” The future of the global EV market will likely depend on a combination of strategic industry adaptations and thoughtful trade policies to ensure a balanced and competitive environment.

Industry Reactions and Strategic Challenges

Elon Musk is not alone in his criticism of the new tariffs. Many industry leaders share his concerns, fearing that tariffs alone will not suffice to address the competitive threat posed by Chinese electric vehicles. Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, has been particularly vocal about Western automakers needing to adapt and innovate rather than relying solely on protective measures. “Tariffs are a major trap for the countries that go on that path,” Tavares warned in a recent interview. He emphasized that the automotive industry must find ways to compete with Chinese manufacturers’ cost advantages through restructuring and strategic innovation.

Tavares pointed out that Western automakers need to overhaul their operations to reduce costs and improve efficiency. “When you fight against the competition that has a 30% cost competitiveness edge, there are social consequences,” he explained, indicating the broader economic and social impacts of relying solely on tariffs. He believes that without significant restructuring, Western carmakers will struggle to compete with their Chinese counterparts, who have managed to keep production costs low while ramping up technological advancements.

The automotive industry faces a dual challenge: addressing the immediate competitive threat from Chinese EVs while planning for long-term sustainability and innovation. Industry experts argue that Western automakers must invest in new technologies, such as advanced manufacturing processes and next-generation battery technologies, to close the gap. “Innovation is the key to competing in the global EV market,” said an automotive analyst. “Western manufacturers must focus on developing cutting-edge technologies that can offer better performance and efficiency than their Chinese rivals.”

In addition to technological innovation, strategic partnerships and collaborations could be crucial in maintaining competitiveness. By forming alliances with tech companies, battery manufacturers, and other stakeholders, automakers can pool resources and expertise to drive innovation. “Collaboration is essential in today’s interconnected world,” noted an industry consultant. “Automakers must leverage partnerships to accelerate technological advancements and reduce costs.”

Furthermore, the industry must navigate the complex regulatory environment that varies significantly across regions. Different countries have different standards and incentives for electric vehicles, which can impact market strategies. For instance, the European Union’s stringent emissions regulations and subsidies for EVs have driven significant growth in the region. “Understanding and adapting to regional regulations is critical for global success,” an industry expert remarked. “Automakers need to tailor their strategies to meet local requirements while maintaining a global perspective.”

How Large Language Models Are Revolutionizing Information Delivery https://www.webpronews.com/how-large-language-models-are-revolutionizing-information-delivery/ Fri, 24 May 2024 12:08:17 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604905 For decades, search engines were our go-to source for information on virtually any topic. The process was simple: input a query, hit enter, and sift through pages of links to find the desired answer. While efficient, this method had its limitations, often requiring users to piece together information from multiple sources.

That may all change now that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and GPT-4 have entered the conversation. LLMs refer to powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems trained on massive datasets to understand and generate human language. They’re designed to engage in conversation, produce coherent articles, summarize complex information, and more.

A recently published study found that LLMs returned more accurate answers to queries compared to Google’s search engine. This is likely because of how these systems work. Where search engines only index web pages and rank them by relevance, an LLM goes beyond indexing – they synthesize information from a vast compendium of sources to deliver tailored and contextually accurate responses.

With this approach, there is a shift from passive information retrieval to active information generation. A user doesn’t simply dig up pre-existing content anymore but receives targeted responses based on their queries.

However, traditional search engines are not going away any time soon. In fact, it’s the fusion of search engine capabilities and LLMs that are driving the information delivery revolution. An example of this is Microsoft’s Copilot. Through a chat-based interface, users can input their question and receive tailored responses generated by AI. The search engine crawls and presents the most relevant information to the LLM, and the latter then analyzes and summarizes the answer in an easy-to-understand format.

In the future, this would eliminate the need for search engine optimization (SEO), as web page rankings would no longer define the accessibility of information. Digital marketing strategies would then shift towards quality content production aligned with AI understanding, rather than tweaking keywords to optimize search engine rankings.

This next-generation information delivery is not just limited to search results. LLMs are poised to disrupt a variety of sectors, from education to business to governance. Lawyer April Dawson recently highlighted the importance of LLM’s information generation in similar professions, stating “With the advent of generative AI and large language models, lawyers now have powerful tools at their disposal to extract and summarize information more efficiently.” This is because LLMs can gather facts for them and provide a nuanced analysis of statutes, regulation, and case law.

LLMS can also streamline processes in healthcare, where practitioners typically rely on various sources to determine patients’ diagnoses. In a survey of over 2,000 American adults who have asked ChatGPT for a diagnosis after asking it about their symptoms, at least 84% of the respondents admitted that the LLM got it right, after consulting with a doctor.

While this doesn’t indicate that AI should replace doctors, it underscores the potential of LLMs as a decision-support tool for healthcare practitioners. With quick access to a synthesis of medical literature and patient data, physicians can reach an informed decision faster, thereby improving patient outcomes and experiences.

Of course, the reality is that LLMs are still nascent and have limitations that AI scientists are working to address. In hindsight, while the LLMs mark a huge milestone in communication, one that’s akin to the invention of the printing press, they face an age-old challenge: ensuring the validity, accuracy, and ethical standing of the information being provided.

Recent frameworks and developments may help strengthen the capabilities of such models to return accurate and up-to-date information. The goal is to ensure that these models evolve in alignment with our ethical standards while providing practical value to society. This means creating systems that can distinguish and eliminate bias, misinformation, and offensive content from its algorithms.

As we stand on the precipice of this AI-driven revolution, we must also consider the human element. The role of data scientists, developers, and machine learning experts has never been more crucial in shaping the future of our digital landscape. These professionals are tasked not only with refining the capabilities of LLMs but also with guiding these machines to understand the intricacies of human emotion, sensitivity, and cultural context. It’s a tall order, but with the rapid pace of developments in AI and machine learning, it’s certainly within reach.

Report: Sustainable Aviation Fuel Is a Fantasy https://www.webpronews.com/report-sustainable-aviation-fuel-is-a-fantasy/ Thu, 23 May 2024 20:09:58 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604896 Lawmakers hoping the aviation industry will be able to pivot to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are in for a disappointment, with a new report calling SAFs a “marketing ploy.”

Lawmakers and climate activists have targeted the airline industry and its carbon footprint. Many have pinned their hopes on SAFs, with some lawmakers pushing for regulation that would require the airline industry to move to SAFs.

There’s just one problem: According to the Institute for Policy Studies, SAFs are little more than a fantasy.

This fuel is typically made from crops or waste and can be substituted for current forms of jet fuel, or more likely mixed with it, ostensibly reducing emissions.

Unfortunately, we find that these fuels are largely — so far — a false solution.

There is currently no realistic or scalable alternative to kerosene-based fuels that would meet current aviation needs, let alone the industry’s projections of future growth. At present, SAF technologies would fail to meet U.S. climate goals by the target year of 2050.

As the Institute highlights, SAFs are especially being touted by the private jet industry, since its carbon footprint is 10 to 20 times worse per passenger than commercial airlines. As a result, lawmakers are particularly focused on the private jet industry, driving it to bank on SAFs as a solution.

The Institute acknowledges that true SAFs are possible, but the resources required to create them at scale would defeat the purpose and raise additional societal issues.

  • Scaling up SAF production may thwart emissions reduction goals. Currently, in order to rapidly expand the production of sustainable aviation fuels, producers must use biogenic feedstocks — which could threaten global food security as well as nature-based carbon sequestration solutions such as the preservation of forests and wetlands. Plus, burning SAFs still emits CO2 — sometimes more than that of kerosene-based jet fuel. As such, SAF production may actively undermine Paris Agreement emissions reduction targets.
  • Realistic increases in SAF production are decades off. In 2022, the U.S. produced just 15.8 million gallons of SAF. Meeting the Biden administration’s 2030 SAF production target of 3 billion gallons per year would require an 18,887 percent production increase over the next six years. To meet the 2050 target of 35 billion gallons, production would have to increase a whopping 227,400 percent over 2022 production levels.

The cost of scaling up SAF production remains prohibitive as well. For example, it is estimated that it would cost roughly $30 billion to create the necessary infrastructure to meet the 2030 goal of producing 3 billion gallons that the Biden administration has established.

The Institute acknowledges that more research is needed, along with improvements in technology. In the meantime, however, the recommendation is simply to fly less, especially when it comes to private jets.

Private jet expansion, even with alternative fuels, is the least defensible use of societal resources on a warming planet.

In addition to national regulators, state and local governments will play a crucial role in deploying autonomous vehicles. States like California, Arizona, and Texas, which have been more open to autonomous vehicle testing, could be early adopters of fully autonomous Tesla vehicles. “We could see pilot programs in cities like San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix where local regulations are more favorable,” Gibbs predicted. “If Tesla can demonstrate consistent safety improvements, it’s likely that these areas will be the first to experience the benefits of fully autonomous driving.”

As the regulatory landscape evolves, the dialogue between Tesla and regulatory bodies will be critical. Musk’s vision for a future with fully autonomous vehicles hinges on technological advancements, regulatory acceptance, and public trust. “Our goal is to create a safer driving environment for everyone,” Musk reiterated. “By continuing to share our data and engage with regulators, we hope to accelerate the adoption of autonomous driving technology and ultimately save lives on the road.”

Seasonality and Data Trends

Understanding the seasonality and trends within Tesla’s safety data is crucial for contextualizing the improvements observed in their autonomous driving systems. Seasonal variations significantly impact driving conditions, which in turn affect accident rates. John Gibbs states, “Quarter four typically presents the worst driving conditions due to shorter days, holiday travel, and inclement weather, which naturally leads to a higher incidence of accidents.”

Tesla’s data from the first quarter of 2024 shows a marked improvement over the same period in 2023 despite these seasonal challenges. Gibbs notes that “Quarter one results are particularly impressive because they reflect improvements made during a time when driving conditions are still recovering from winter’s adverse effects.” This seasonal analysis highlights the robustness of Tesla’s autopilot system improvements.

Looking at the broader trend, the data indicates a general upward trajectory in safety, particularly with the introduction of Full Self-Driving (FSD) software updates. “We see that each iteration of Tesla’s software incorporates the latest real-world data, allowing for continuous improvement,” Gibbs explained. “The significant leap in safety metrics between quarters is not just a seasonal anomaly but a testament to Tesla’s iterative development process.”

Moreover, the lumpiness of the data, as described by Gibbs, can be attributed to the relatively low number of accidents involving Teslas compared to the millions of miles driven. “Because the fleet experiences few accidents, even a small increase or decrease can appear significant in the data,” he said. “This variability underscores the importance of looking at long-term trends rather than short-term fluctuations.”

Quarter two of 2024 is poised to provide even more insightful data. “With the free trial of FSD 12 and a substantial increase in the number of users, we anticipate that the data will either validate the current trends or reveal new insights into the system’s performance under broader usage,” Gibbs projected. He added, “If the data continues to show improvements, especially with a larger user base, it will be a powerful indicator of the system’s reliability and scalability.”

Elon Musk has also commented on the significance of these seasonal trends. “Understanding how our vehicles perform across different seasons and conditions is essential,” he said. It helps us identify areas for improvement and ensures that our technology is resilient and adaptable to real-world driving scenarios.”

Tesla’s recent call to action for shareholders to participate in a crucial vote underscores the importance of corporate governance in shaping the company’s future. The upcoming vote involves two pivotal issues: Elon Musk’s compensation package and the proposal to move Tesla’s incorporation from Delaware to Texas. Both issues significantly affect the company’s strategic direction and operational framework.

John Gibbs emphasized the critical nature of these votes in his recent video, urging shareholders to make their voices heard. “This is actually a very important vote,” Gibbs said. “Elon’s compensation package, which was previously deemed invalid by the court of Delaware, is up for re-approval. This package, though substantial, reflects the enormous milestones Tesla has achieved under Musk’s leadership. It’s crucial for shareholders to support this to ensure he is compensated for his contributions since 2018.”

Another contentious issue is Tesla’s proposed relocation of its incorporation to Texas. Gibbs highlighted the potential challenges, noting, “The incorporation in Texas might not pass because any votes not cast count as ‘no’ votes. This means there’s a significant hurdle to clear, as 75% of shareholders need to actively vote for it to be approved.” The shift to Texas is seen as a strategic move to align the company more closely with its operational base and leverage the state’s business-friendly environment.

The outcome of these votes will profoundly impact Tesla’s corporate governance structure. If Musk’s compensation package is approved, it would validate the milestones achieved and set a precedent for future executive compensation packages. “This isn’t just about Elon Musk,” Gibbs explained. “It’s about recognizing the value of visionary leadership and ensuring that the incentives are aligned with long-term shareholder value.”

On the other hand, the relocation to Texas represents a broader strategic shift. “Moving to Texas could provide Tesla with more flexibility and a regulatory environment that supports its ambitious growth plans,” Gibbs said. However, the potential failure of this vote also underscores the challenges of mobilizing shareholder participation. “It’s a reminder of the importance of every vote. Shareholders need to be proactive to ensure their voices are heard in decisions that shape the future of the company.”

Moreover, the outcome of these votes could influence Tesla’s engagement with regulators and policymakers. A successful move to Texas might signal to other tech companies the benefits of relocating to states with favorable business climates. “Tesla has always been a trailblazer,” Gibbs remarked. “If this move is successful, it could set a trend for other companies looking to optimize their corporate structures.”

The upcoming shareholder vote is a critical juncture for Tesla. It highlights the importance of corporate governance and the need for active shareholder participation. As Gibbs aptly put it, “Tesla’s future is in the hands of its shareholders. Their votes will determine the company’s strategic direction and its ability to continue pioneering innovations in the automotive and energy sectors.” This vote is more than just a procedural formality; it is a decisive moment that will shape the trajectory of Tesla’s growth and governance.

FCC Proposes Disclosure Rule For AI-Generated Political Content In Ads https://www.webpronews.com/fcc-proposes-disclosure-rule-for-ai-generated-political-content-in-ads/ Thu, 23 May 2024 11:31:00 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604853 The Federal Communications Commission is looking to tackle AI-generated content in political ads, proposing a rule that would require such content be disclosed.

One of the biggest fears many critics have with AI is that it can be used to generate extemely realistic fake content that can be used in political ads, potentially having far-reaching impacts on elections and public policy. The FCC is taking the first steps to address such content, looking “into whether the agency should require disclosure when there is AI-generated content in political ads on radio and TV.”

The agency has issues Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and is looking for clarification on the following:

  • Seeking comment on whether to require an on-air disclosure and written disclosure in broadcasters’ political files when there is AI-generated content in political ads,
  • Proposing to apply the disclosure rules to both candidate and issue advertisements,
  • Requesting comment on a specific definition of AI-generated content, and
  • Proposing to apply the disclosure requirements to broadcasters and entities that engage in origination programming, including cable operators, satellite TV and radio providers and section 325(c) permittees.

The FCC clarifies that it is not seeking to prohibit or ban such content, only to require full disclosure and transparency when it is used.

“As artificial intelligence tools become more accessible, the Commission wants to make sure consumers are fully informed when the technology is used,” said Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. “Today, I’ve shared with my colleagues a proposal that makes clear consumers have a right to know when AI tools are being used in the political ads they see, and I hope they swiftly act on this issue.”

The FCC makes clear that, while AI is expected to play a significant role in the 2024 election cycle, the ability to use AI to create deceptive content necessitates that safeguards be put in place.

The use of AI is expected to play a substantial role in the creation of political ads in 2024 and beyond, but the use of AI-generated content in political ads also creates a potential for providing deceptive information to voters, in particular, the potential use of “deep fakes” – altered images, videos, or audio recordings that depict people doing or saying things that did not actually do or say, or events that did not actually occur.

This issue is just one of many that illustrates the seismic shift AI is causing across industries and walks of life.

OpenAI May Have Run Afoul of Microsoft With Scarlett Johansson Debacle https://www.webpronews.com/openai-may-have-run-afoul-of-microsoft-with-scarlett-johansson-debacle/ Thu, 23 May 2024 11:15:59 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604873 OpenAI may have run afoul of its biggest investor, with Microsoft CEO Sayta Nadella mincing no words regarding his thoughts on “anthropomorphizing AI.”

OpenAI raised serious questions after actress Scarlett Johansson published a statement about OpenAI allegedly using her voice for GPT-4o’s “Sky” voice. The statement was supported by the fact that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman repeatedly tried to work out a collaboration deal with Johansson in the lead-up to Sky’s debut, an offer which Johansson refused. Whey OpenAI revealed Sky, news outlets, users, and even Johansson’s own family, though the voice sounded just like her, and especially her portrayal of an AI in the movie Her. Altman even commemorated GPT-4o and Sky’s reveal with a tweet that said “Her.”

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, via Futurism, Nadella did not speak highly of attempts to anthropomorphize AI.

“I don’t like anthropomorphizing AI,” Nadella said in the interview. “I sort of believe it’s a tool.”

“It has got intelligence, if you want to give it that moniker, but it’s not the same intelligence that I have,” he added.

“I think one of the most unfortunate names is ‘artificial intelligence’ — I wish we had called it ‘different intelligence,'” he said. “Because I have my intelligence. I don’t need any artificial intelligence.”

While directly commenting on the OpenAI/Johansson issue, it was nonetheless a telling exchange. Nadella’s views on the matter are clearly not in harmony with whatever motivated Altman to tweet “Her.”

Similarly, in a Bloomberg interview, Nadella made clear that OpenAI’s focus on safety was one of the main things that brought the two companies together.

“One of the fundamental things that brought OpenAI and Microsoft together way back even in 2019 was that focus on how do we make sure we that can make progress—and at that time it is not even clear as to whether things will even work the way they work. But even there, that company was very grounded on their mission around ‘hey we want to bring the benefits of this to the broader set of audience and do it safely.'”

If Microsoft values safety as much as Nadella says, it’s hard to imagine the company being OK with OpenAI’s handling of the Johansson situation.

T-Mobile Raises Price On Legacy Plans https://www.webpronews.com/t-mobile-raises-price-on-legacy-plans/ Thu, 23 May 2024 00:18:58 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604846 T-Mobile has done the unexpected, raising prices on its legacy plans, with the new pricing going into effect in June.

T-Mobile is well-known for its Uncarrier initiative, giving customers the features they want at a reasonable price. As a result, the company’s announced price hike was unexpected, as the T-Mobile has not raised prices on legacy customers for years.

Unfortunately, the company is now raising prices on those accounts $5 per line per month, and $2 per line per month for connected device plans, such as tablets and wearables.

The company was quick to point out that this is the first such price hike in nearly a decade, and that it is still cheaper than its competitors.

We’re committed to offering the best value in wireless.

Even with these changes, T-Mobile customers still pay less, saving an average of approximately 20% vs AT&T and Verizon for comparable services and streaming.

?You’ll keep all the benefits you currently enjoy, including access to America’s largest and fastest 5G network, and no further action is needed from you.

AI Device Maker Humane Is Reportedly Shopping a Buyer https://www.webpronews.com/ai-device-maker-humane-is-reportedly-shopping-a-buyer/ Wed, 22 May 2024 21:14:05 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604841 AI device maker Humane is reportedly looking for a buyer after a disastrous product launch that was universally panned by critics.

According to a report by Bloomberg, via The Verge, Humane is looking for a buyer and is “seeking a price of between $750 million and $1 billion.” The company’s AI Pin was designed to bring AI to the masses in a form factor designed to be an alternative to smartphones.

Humane had the benefit of having a number of former Apple executives on its roster, being founded by Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, with Patrick Gates later joining them. Despite the company’s pedigree, its initial product launch suffered major setbacks, not the least of which was news that OpenAI was working with Jony Ive to design AI-based hardware, news that broke shortly before Humane’s big launch.

Things only got worse from there, with reviewers panning the AI Pin. In fact, YouTuber Marques Brownlee called the device “the worst product I’ve ever reviewed…for now.”

Given how quickly the AI space is moving, how competitive it has become, and Humane’s disastrous first step into it, it’s unclear if the company will be able to secure a deal for anywhere near its asking price.
