BP Needs 70% Less Coders Thanks to AI https://www.webpronews.com/bp-needs-70-less-coders-thanks-to-ai/ Wed, 08 May 2024 02:25:20 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=604355 BP revealed its Q1 2024 results today while revealing a surprising fact about its use of generative AI, saying it needs 70% less coders.

Gen AI is increasingly used in coding and software development, and BP says the tech is allowing it to greatly streamline its programming needs and workflows.

“We’ve done an awful lot to digitize many parts of our business and we’re now applying Gen AI to it,” said CEO Murray Auchincloss, via a Seeking Alpha transcript. “The places that we’re seeing tremendous results on are coding. We need 70% less coders from third parties to code as the AI handles most of the coding, the human only needs to look at the final 30% to validate it, that’s a big savings for the company moving forward.”

Interestingly, Auchincloss acknowledges that human programmers are still needed to verify and validate code generated by AI, as using AI has been known to result in less secure code.

Auchincloss also said generative AI is revolutionizing the company’s call centers.

“Second things like call centers, the language models have become so sophisticated now,” the CEO adds. “They can operate in multiple languages, 14, 15 languages easily. In the past, that hasn’t been something we can do. So we can redeploy people off that given that the AI can do it. You heard my advertising example last quarter where advertising cycle times moved from four to five months down to a couple of weeks. So that’s obviously reducing spend with third parties.”

BP’s success using generative AI is also a big win for Microsoft, as Auchincloss said the company is relying on Microsoft Copilot.

“We’ve now got Gen AI in the hands through Microsoft Copilot across many, many parts of the business and we’ll continue to update you with anecdotes as we go through.”

BP is providing a good example of the many ways generative AI can help companies digitize and revolutionize their operations.

Apple has been quietly working on its own AI models in an effort to catch up to rivals Microsoft and Google. A major difference between the iPhone maker and other companies is Apple’s emphasis on privacy, which means running AI models locally, rather than in the cloud.

The company has given the clearest window yet into its plans, releasing OpenELM for others to use. The announcmeent was made by Sachin Mehta, Mohammad Hossein Sekhavat, Qingqing Cao, Maxwell Horton, Yanzi Jin, Chenfan Sun, Iman Mirzadeh, Mahyar Najibi, Dmitry Belenko, Peter Zatloukal, and Mohammad Rastegari.

We introduce OpenELM, a family of Open-source Efficient Language Models. OpenELM uses a layer-wise scaling strategy to efficiently allocate parameters within each layer of the transformer model, leading to enhanced accuracy. We pretrained OpenELM models using the CoreNet library. We release both pretrained and instruction tuned models with 270M, 450M, 1.1B and 3B parameters.

Our pre-training dataset contains RefinedWeb, deduplicated PILE, a subset of RedPajama, and a subset of Dolma v1.6, totaling approximately 1.8 trillion tokens. Please check license agreements and terms of these datasets before using them.

The Apple researchers say OpenELM was trained on publicly available data sources, another departure from the status quo.

Fedora 40 Released With Major Updates, Including Initial AI Development Support https://www.webpronews.com/fedora-40-released-with-major-updates-including-initial-ai-development-support/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 00:27:33 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=603730 Fedora Linux was released Tuesday, bringing major updates to various desktop environments, as well as support for AI development.

Fedora is a popular Linux distro that serves as the upstream basis for what eventually becomes Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). As a result, Fedora serves as something of a testbed and is well-established in the Linux ecosystem as the distro that pushes adoption of new technologies, such as PipeWire and Wayland.

On the desktop environment front, Fedora Workstation ships with the recently released Gnome 46, while the KDE spin ships with KDE Plasma 6. Similarly, the Cinnamon spin ships with the latest Cinnamon 6.

Fedora 40 continues its trend of adopting new technologies, including PyTorch for the first time, according to Fedora Project Leader Matthew Miller.

Fedora Linux 40 ships with our first-ever PyTorch package. PyTorch is a popular framework for deep learning, and it can be difficult to reliably install with the right versions of drivers and libraries and so on. The current package only supports running on the CPU, without GPU or NPU acceleration, but this is just the first step. Our aim is to produce a complete stack with PyTorch and other popular tools ready to use on a wide variety of hardware out-of-the-box.

We’re also shipping with ROCm 6 — open-source software that provides acceleration support for AMD graphics cards. We plan to have that enabled for PyTorch in a future release.

AI is already a controversial topic for many, and nowhere are there stronger feelings about it than within the Linux community. Many look to Linux as the last bastion of AI-free computing, with developers of the Gentoo distro even banning any contributions that were made with AI assistance. As Nick with The Linux Experiment points out, even Linux creator Linus Torvalds said the current AI hype is “hilarious to watch,” and that the current tech is basically “autocorrect on steroids.”

Nonetheless, Fedora has made clear the project’s intention to become “the best community platform for AI,” as Miller shared in in a Fedora Strategy 2024: April 2024 Update.

The Guiding Star for Strategy 2028 is about growing our contributor base. We can make Fedora Linux the best community platform for AI, and in doing so, open a new frontier of contribution and community potential.

This won’t be easy. We have a lot of basic work on platform fundamentals. That’s drivers and tooling, packages and containers, and even new ways of distributing Fedora software. We also need to improve developer experience — for example, it’d be nice to have Podman Desktop as part of Fedora, with easy paths to getting started.

We can use AI/ML as part of making the Fedora Linux OS. New tools could help with package automation and bug triage. They could note anomalies in test results and logs, maybe even help identify potential security issues. We can also create infrastructure-level features for our users. For example, package update descriptions aren’t usually very meaningful. We could automatically generate concise summaries of what’s new in each system update — not just for each package, but highlighting what’s important in the whole set, including upstream change information as well.

Whatever antipathy much of the desktop Linux community may feel toward AI, if the Fedora Project is including initial support—with plans to increasingly embrace AI—it’s likely only a matter of time before other distros follow suit.

Nvidia’s Secret Weapon against Intel and Google: Its Software Ecosystem https://www.webpronews.com/nvidias-secret-weapon-against-intel-and-google-its-software-ecosystem/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 20:17:12 +0000 https://www.webpronews.com/?p=603255 As big tech companies like Intel and Google delve into creating their silicon to power AI technologies, Nvidia continues to dominate the industry, not through hardware alone but with a crucial, often underappreciated weapon: its software ecosystem.

Alex Kantrowitz, founder of Big Technology and a CNBC contributor, recently explained why Nvidia remains a step ahead in the fiercely competitive AI market. Despite Intel’s announcements touting the prowess of its chips, Kantrowitz suggests that Nvidia’s real advantage lies in its comprehensive software suite, which is critical for developing AI models. “Intel can tout the power of its chips all it wants, but without a solid software strategy, it’s playing catch-up,” Kantrowitz said.

Nvidia has become synonymous with high-performance computing related to AI. Developers rely heavily on Nvidia’s software to train and deploy AI models, creating a lock-in effect where switching costs are high. This ecosystem integration makes Nvidia’s platform exceptionally sticky; transitioning to a competitor like Intel would require significant performance leaps to justify the switch.

“The inertia within the developer community benefits Nvidia immensely,” Kantrowitz explained. “For many, moving away from Nvidia’s integrated software and hardware environment would involve not just adopting new technology but revamping existing workflows, which is neither simple nor cost-effective.”

This discussion arises amid broader tech industry trends where companies increasingly seek to control more of their technology stack. For example, Google has been building its own chips to better integrate its hardware and software capabilities, particularly for running large-scale AI models more efficiently. This move is crucial for maintaining competitiveness in the cloud sector and beyond.

“The narrative that Google is somehow in trouble is overstated,” Kantrowitz added. While Google faces challenges, particularly around margin pressures as it expands its hardware ambitions, these are balanced by significant opportunities in sectors like cloud computing and AI services.

Under CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon has focused on streamlining operations post-pandemic overexpansion. Kantrowitz noted that Amazon had to pull back from an unsustainable aggressive expansion strategy in a post-COVID-19 world where e-commerce growth normalized. “Amazon’s recent recalibrations are about finding a new equilibrium where it can continue to innovate without the bloat of pandemic-era excesses,” he stated.

Companies like Apple and Tesla continue to navigate their challenges in the broader landscape. Apple’s struggle to break into new categories like autonomous cars highlights cultural rigidities that stymie innovation compared to more flexible tech giants.

As the tech giants pivot and adapt to the ever-evolving demands of AI and machine learning, Nvidia’s position looks robust, underpinned by its dual strengths in hardware and, crucially, in software. This combination secures its current dominance and smartly positions it for future growth in an increasingly AI-driven world.
